Berlin is a great culinary capital for experiencing all sides of the food spectrum. Ranging from down-to-earth and easy-going home-made food all the way up to the poshest and slickest dining experiences: Berlin’s restaurants are a treat for any kind of eater. Among the more interesting places I visited recently, was the Long March Canteen. A fashionable and semi-chique (also quite hyped these days) Chinese restaurant. ‘Let your chopsticks do the talking’ is the promising motto present on their menus and cards.

The restaurant is located in Kreuzberg, in the center of current day cultural and trendy developments. And since the prices of this establishment are reasonably high – comparing to other local restaurants – the bar was set high. First impressions of this place are great: its design is eye-catching, out-of-the-ordinary and gives you a very oriental experiences from the moment you cross the threshold. Since I am a sucker for the whole customer experience, I love being wooed by deco.

Eating Chinese Food at the Long March Canteen

The menu – printed on large pieces of paper, casually held together by a metallic clip – at Long March Canteen sports dim sum and dumplings. There’s cold or warm dim sum and dumplings in various sorts: steamed, baked or cooked – and various meaty fillings, fish to veggie. In the drinks department, Long March Canteen has an impressive wine list. Most wines are orderable per bottle, but there are also some wines that go per glass.

One orders around 3 to 4 dishes per person. Depending on your appetite for a dessert afterwards. We went for the 3 dim sum a head, which was a perfect match with a shared dessert to end it all off. Our dim sum included: pork belly, shitake mushrooms with shrimp, bok choy salad, scallops with tofu, vegetarian dumplings and grilled calamari. We also chose a steamed rice pack in a lotus leaf, which can be a nice addition to your nibbles.

The great thing about the food at Long March Canteen is how easily you can vary the flavours and the dishes – that is why I love ordering food ‘tapas-style’. It is, however, not really the perfect place for sharing dishes. As most dishes are simply too small to share with more than one friend. Basically: perfect for eating different things and sharing a bit (for two).

So, the food. I expected it to be nice, half-decent food. But I was surprised: it was actually, really good. The presentation of all the dishes was quite stunning and the food was really, very good. Sincere, soft flavours with well-balanced combinations of ingredients. China-reminiscent, according to our Good Food consultant straight from China. I love my scallops (proof: here, here) and the scallops at Long March Canteen were fresh, soft and perfect – and with the flavoursome addition of the tofu. But my personal favourite were the shitake mushrooms with shrimp filling, creating little balls of mushroom and shrimp. It looks less appetizing than it was: absolutely de-li-cious! And there were many more interesting dishes left on the menu; I was half-tempting to order more.

As a dessert we chose the fried banana, an oriental dessert classic. Warm and soft to the bite, with a bowl of ice water to caramelize the exterior. A nice experience-esque touch.

Summarised: great food, great location, quite pricey. But it’s worth it: a cool experience.
